Flood Peak Reaches Gunnedah

The Namoi River is close to its peak of 7.8 metres in Gunnedah this afternoon.

 

At 3pm Sunday the 30th of November, the Namoi River at Gunnedah was at 7.7 metres and close to its predicted peak of 7.8 metres. Two properties were evacuated by the SES as a precaution, with water through the yards and under a number of properties on the fringe of the town.

The Oxley Highway is closed between Gunnedah and Tamworth in several locations and is likely to ramain so until late Sunday. There are also numerous local roads closed. One couple have had to be rescued by the Rural Fire Service after their vehicle became stranded in floodwater near Gunnedah. The SES is urging motorists not to drive through floodwaters as these may be deeper than they look and contain hidden snags and debris and washed out sectins of roadway.

In the Gunnedah area crop damage has occured, as well as damage to fencing. The SES is monitoring the welfare of rural property owners who are isolated and will provide assistance if required. Rural property owners who have not done so are urged to prepare their property ahead of flooding by moving stock, equipment and pumps to high ground.

After a person was discovered placing a container of an unknown substance into the river at Gunnedah this morning, the SES are reminding people not to put chemicals or other substances into the river, as this is an offence. 

The floodwaters will reach Wee Waa on Monday 1 December and peak at 6.4 metres with moderate flooding on Tuesday 2 December.
