Major Flooding Predicted for Tamworth

Torrential rain in the Peel River catchment in the past 24 hours has resulted in a number of rescues and a major flood warning being issued by the Bureau of Meteorology.

 

Falls of up to 200mm of rain in the past 36 hours have resulted in the issuing of a flood warning for the Peel River at Tamworth. The Peel River is expected to reach 6.2 metres at around 3pm today, SAturday with major flooding.

Late Friday night the SES undertook a total of five rescues of people in Tamworth including people trapped in vehicles on causeways and in their homes. The SES has also responded to numerous requests for assistance from residents requiring sandbagging of properties and for leaking roofs.

Although rain has eased, floodwaters continue to rise in many areas and the SES urges people in the area to not drive, ride or walk through floodwaters as water can be deeper or faster flowing than it looks and contain hidden snags and debris.
