When a Cyclone Watch is Issued

A cyclone watch is issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for coastal communities if cyclonic gales are expected within 48 hours but not sooner than 24 hours.

A Tropical Cyclone Watch is issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for coastal communities when gales are expected within 48 hours, but not within 24 hours.

Tropical Cyclone Watches are posted on the Bureau of Meteorology's Current Tropical Cyclones page.

Further information on Cyclone Advices including watches and warnings is available from the Bureau of Meteorology.

If a Cyclone Watch has been issued for your area, the New South Wales SES recommends that you:

  • Ensure all loose items are tied down or put away
  • Fill vehicle fuel tanks
  • Check your emergency kit
  • Ensure that you have sufficient supplies of bottled water for several days
  • Ensure household members know which is the strongest part of the house and what to do in the event of a cyclone warning or evacuation
  • Listen to the radio for updates and advice
  • Check neighbours are aware of the situation and are preparing
  • Clean up or secure loose items in your yard or on your balcony

You should continue to closely monitor the media for further information and advice.

If gales are expected within 24 hours, a cyclone warning will be issued.
