Schools

The NSW SES is committed to building resilience to floods, storms and tsunami.  We also promote the role the service plays in the community.

Education, community awareness, building resilience through developing people's capacity to respond to these events and engaging with communities in NSW are important activities of the SES.  Doing this can assist the community to become better prepared for, more responsive to and better able to recover from floods, storms and tsunami.

SES Units are able to visit schools to:

  • Talk about floods, storms and tsunami and how to be prepared for, respond to and recover from these events
  • The roles that the SES plays in emergencies
  • Demonstrate the range of equipment used in these events

The SES has developed specific resource packages for:

  • Kindergarten to Year 2, and
  • Year 9 Geography

The Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council (AFAC) in collaboration with all Australian States and Territories State Emergency Services, have developed a national Natural Hazards Safety Program , utilising characters from the Li'l Larrikins cartoons to deliver safety messages to children aged 5 to 12.  Further teaching resources are being developed in line with national curriculum standards for the program.
