Chance of flooding

It is important that you understand the chance of your business being flooded.

Flood events are usually described in terms of probability or long-term averages.   Your council may be able to provide this information for your property.  The following table provides information about the chance of your business being flooded in a ten or twenty year period.

Chance in any year (Annual Exceedance Probability)

Chance of occurring within the next 10 Years

Chance of occurring within the next 20 Years

5% AEP

40%

64%

2% AEP

18%

33%

1% AEP

10%

18%

0.2% AEP

2%

4%

For example, if your property is affected by the 5% Annual Exceedance Probability flood event there is a 40% chance that you will experience a flood this high or higher at least once in the next ten years.

It is important to remember that these flood events can occur at any time and that it is possible for these flood events to occur more than once in any year.
